veterinarian’s –
she leaves
with a box and tears

early spring day –
train rolls across
rust-streaked bridge

thinking as I shop
“I could get that for her” –
old habits…

late at night
I look for intruders –
just wind, this time

The Way We Were
on movie channel –
too soon…

steam wand –
light jazz radio
boils away

my cat’s world
now as dark
as her fur

“Ode to Joy”
in my head all day –
cleaning the litter box

constant wind
less personal
in the city

microwave
counts off seconds
of my life
